A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's major government projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This project was closely associated with his government's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
