The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The ex-president was sentenced of planning a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after recent developments were revealed.

This encompassed seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could enable a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said data from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's "intention to break the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a gathering of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to kill his opponent and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The plot was prevented because it failed to get the backing of the military leaders. The current president was took office without issue on 1 January 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, numerous his followers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The police intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The judges found that the protesters had been provoked by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
